The Frac Grand Large’s visitor services team offers a range of guided tours enabling school groups, from nursery school age upwards, to explore the Frac and its exhibitions.


The team also organises long-term art and design projects, both in its own building and in schools across the region.

Come along to the Frac from Wednesday to Friday! We welcome school groups on Wednesdays from 2.00 pm to 5.30 pm, and from Thursday to Friday from 9.30 am to 12.00 pm and then from 2.00 pm to 5.30 pm. 

There are several types of tour available: guided tours, workshop tours and self-guided tours. 

All these visits are based on the PEAC and are therefore designed to enable both pupils and teachers to build on ideas already explored in class, or to explore new avenues of work. 

The outreach team is also on hand to help you set up long-term projects, through which pupils will develop their understanding of the world of contemporary art and the issues it raises.

GUIDED TOUR

Our education officers will guide you! Over the course of an hour, you and your class will explore the Frac. For your visit, you can choose between an architectural tour and a tour of the exhibitions. The exhibition tour is tailored to your group’s school year group and thus ties in with key themes that you can continue to explore in class.

STUDIO TOUR

In conjunction with the visit to the Frac (45 minutes), the school group takes part in a workshop (45 minutes) whose themes are tailored to the exhibitions and the group’s school curriculum. The workshop provides an opportunity to explore the artworks already viewed in greater depth and, through hands-on experimentation, helps pupils understand some of the key concepts that underpin contemporary art.

SELF-GUIDED TOUR 

Self-guided tours allow you to organise your own itinerary and enjoy the exhibitions at your own pace with your class. To help you prepare for your visit, two teachers on secondment are involved in developing educational resources linked to the exhibitions. The resources available include:  

  • – Speech cards  
  • – The ‘Parcours avenir’ programme, which introduces participants to careers at the Frac  
  • – Educational resources that use play to introduce recurring themes in contemporary art

“I’m the Guide” 

What if, for the duration of a visit, pupils were to become exhibition guides? With this initiative, the Frac aims to reverse the roles. The programme involves a day at the Frac, where pupils will meet a guide who will stay with them throughout the day and act as their point of contact for organising the tour. The programme can be adapted for off-site delivery; for schools hosting works from the Frac, the entire programme will take place over a single day with a guide visiting the school.

‘Pupils at Work’ (EAO) 

This scheme enables a school to host a work from the Frac on its premises. Giving pupils the opportunity to engage with a work over an extended period allows them to explore key concepts in greater depth and to work in direct engagement with contemporary art.

THE TRAVELLING COLLECTION

A mediator will visit your school for a day in the Nord and Pas-de-Calais regions to meet four classes.

Design Module

Module Design is a unique and innovative project designed for groups, based on a travelling module created by the Lille-based design studio Aequo. The module enables a Frac outreach officer to visit school pupils directly in their own schools: an original opportunity to discover and become familiar with contemporary design and creativity. Once set up, the module enables a display to be created using design works from the collection, thereby demystifying the way the works are presented and also allowing for a more immediate, light-hearted and playful encounter with design.

The relief collection

This programme enables participants to discover an
artist or an art form through an
aesthetic and thematic exploration of art. It
encourages participants to express their views and engage in debate,
viewing art as a mirror of society
. Three themes are on offer:

· The repurposing of everyday
objects: between work of art and consumer product
, based on an object by
Panamarenko.
· Nature in the city? : ecofeminism, based
on a photograph by Ágnes Dénes.
· Repurposed images: photography
and the role of digital technology, based on a
photograph by Isabelle Le Minh.

Architectural Utopias

Based on the work of Yona Friedman, *The
Museum Without a Building* is a modular exhibition
combining the architect’s
projects (collages and models) with a
day-long collective creative session held within
a school. It invites pupils
to reflect on the concepts of walls, boundaries and
borders through artistic creation,
space and architecture.
The programme includes:
1 cross-curricular training session and a choice of:

workshops · or hosting the models for 3 weeks, including 1
day of set-up + workshops

All activities offered by the Frac must be booked at least one month before the chosen date for the activity. The visit must be confirmed by the bookings department. A dedicated area for independent educational activities or picnics can be made available on request (capacity: 60 pupils).

TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF ACCOMMODATION

The Frac can accommodate a maximum of two groups at any one time. One group is equivalent to one class, or 25 higher education students.  

Please specify whether you would like a guided tour, a workshop tour, a self-guided tour or an activity at the time of booking. Receipt of the quotation does not constitute confirmation.

Payment for any service must be made no later than the day of the visit (except where payment is made by administrative payment order). The booking confirmation document is accompanied by a set of terms and conditions (including the Visitor Regulations) which must be signed by the headteachers when booking any visit (guided tour, workshop visit or self-guided visit). 

In the event of cancellation, please send an email to groupes@fracgrandlarge-hdf.fr at least one week before the date of the visit. Any visit cancelled after this deadline will be charged in full.

THE ARTISTS

The teachers seconded to the Frac have made the archives of teaching resources available to you in the form of fact sheets focusing on the work of an artist featured in the collection. These fact sheets pose open-ended questions and draw links with other works to facilitate a multidisciplinary approach.

> THE LYRICS SHEET

For self-guided tours, the teachers on assignment have put together ‘expression packs’ which are available at the Frac reception. In these A4-sized packs, teachers will find words and images to help pupils speak about the artworks and formulate their thoughts on what they are discovering. By introducing an element of fun into pupils’ discussions, these words and images are designed to help them express themselves with less apprehension in a museum setting. These kits are aimed particularly at Year 7 pupils but can also, depending on each teacher’s objectives, be used to help pupils at other levels to speak up.

These resource packs can be used by teachers of all subjects.

The Frac offers a tool designed to help people discover the various roles within the Frac. The objectives are:

  • to find out about the specific careers in the museum sector.
  • to understand that an arts venue does not consist solely of specifically artistic professions and that it provides a wide variety of jobs.

> EDUCATIONAL GAME: CHALLENGE / ONE OBJECT, ONE ERA

Drawing on Piero Gilardi’s *Sassi* (1968) collection of objects, this educational challenge explores everyday objects and the era in which they were created. It enables pupils to learn through independent discovery and by interacting with others, drawing on their powers of observation, deduction and intuition.

> AUDIO WALK: ‘THE SOUND OF THE DUNES’

Created by the artist Rainier Lericolais, the audio walk *Le son des dunes* evokes the history of the Grand Large neighbourhood in Dunkirk, formerly the Chantier Naval de France shipyard. This work also recalls a unique event in Dunkirk’s history: on 25 June 1658, during the Battle of the Dunes, Dunkirk was under Spanish control in the morning, French control at midday and English control by evening. Take your pupils on this self-guided walking tour between the Frac and the LAAC. An educational pack is available on the Frac’s website. This document
offers examples of artistic activities based on the common core
of knowledge, skills and culture across all subject areas.

The walking and audio trail *The Sound of the Dunes* by artist Rainer Lericolais serves to link the Frac Grand Large with its neighbour, the Lieu d’Art et Action Contemporaine (LAAC).
