Frac Grand Large — Hauts-de-France

Every 10 Years

The primary historical mission of a Frac is to build a collection in order to support and promote contemporary creation in all fields related to the visual arts: painting, sculpture, installation, photography, video, sound and digital works, graphic arts, design, and more.

Every 10 years, a full review of the collection — an exhaustive inventory of the works — must be carried out.

Over the past 40 years, the Frac Grand Large has acquired 2,121 works of art and design by 788 French and international artists. Each year, several hundred of these works travel across the region and beyond through exhibitions and loans, bringing contemporary art as close as possible to the public.

The Frac is the custodian of this heritage, responsible for ensuring its proper management to guarantee its preservation and transmission to future generations. Alongside regular preventive conservation, one essential method is to conduct a full review of the collection.

A general check-up
This “collection project” or inventory involves checking the condition of the collection: each work is examined, its location verified, its state of conservation assessed, and its packaging reviewed. It is also an opportunity to update the inventory and technical data sheets — all the information related to its display and installation. The process may also lead to restoration work when needed, and it contributes to a deeper understanding of the collection.

This indispensable preventive and scientific undertaking will be carried out from October 2024 to January 2026 on the 4th floor of the Frac, in the largest exhibition space. This space will allow visitors to discover both the works and the work of our teams.

PROGRAMME PSST

“Taking care of yourself as we take care of the artworks” — alongside the Collection Project of the Frac Grand Large — Hauts-de-France.

From 8 February to 30 November 2025, a new program of activities will take place on the 4th floor of the Frac, right at the heart of the space dedicated to the Collection Project. While the Frac team takes the time needed to examine each artwork, it seems equally important to invite visitors to take time for themselves.

The World Health Organization (WHO) does not define health merely as the absence of disease or infirmity, but emphasizes the importance of physical, mental, and social well-being, focused on individual needs and quality of life. Museums are now widely recognized as places of well-being, improved living, and even healing. Active and receptive participation in culture has a beneficial effect on both individuals and communities, with a recognized positive impact on mental health and well-being.

The Frac aims to go further by offering workshops, tours, and activities designed to allow visitors to take time for themselves and for others. Through stimulation or rest, focus or openness, balance or reorganization, individual and collective well-being is prioritized — just as much as the care and preventive measures dedicated to the artworks in the collection.
